August 26, 2021Wesley Gaddy’s Biography
August 26, 2021Supervised Agricultural Experience:
My SAE is Agricultural Communications. I began my SAE by teaching elementary school students basic elements of agriculture and FFA. It has grown into something much bigger than I would have ever imagined. I conduct in-person and phone interviews with former FFA members, farmers, ranchers, and many other people involved in agriculture. I have also hosted and organized virtual ag career field trips for ag students. Additionally, I write for my local newspaper, “The Choctaw Sun Advocate,” on current topics in agriculture. I hope to continue to grow my SAE.
Career Development/Leadership/Talent Events(s):
I first competed in the Prepared Public Speaking LDE in the 8th grade and went to State. I have also competed in Horse Evaluation CDE, Dairy Evaluation, Employability Skills LDE, and Discussion Meet CDE and have had the opportunity to compete statewide in each competition. Additionally, I have competed in Creed Speaking LDE.
Major FFA Accomplishments:
My major FFA accomplishments include serving on the National FFA Courtesy Corps by holding the flag at the Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo, serving as the 2020-2021 South District Secretary, and of course serving as the 2021-2022 Alabama FFA State Vice President.
Favorite Book:
My favorite book is entitled, Shannon Hale’s Ever After High: The Storybook of Legends. I read it as a kid and was in love with the series. Even as I grow older and continue to read, it is still the most entertaining book I have ever read.
Favorite Movie:
My favorite movie is, “The Prince of Egypt”. It is based on the story of Moses from the bible. It has an amazing soundtrack. My brothers and I loved it as kids and still do. We always quote it. “Second born, second place!”
Favorite Meal:
My favorite meal consists of rice with beef stew, steak, sweet tea, and cheesecake for dessert.
Favorite Quote
“The meanest dog you’ll ever meet, he ain’t the hound dog in the street. He bares some teeth and tears some skin but brother, that’s the worst of him. The dog you really gotta dread is the one who howls inside your head. It’s him whose howling drives men mad and a mind to its undoing.” – Hermes
Favorite Song:
My favorite song is definitely, “Rock with You” by Michael Jackson. I love the drums in the beginning!
Favorite Thing about FFA:
My favorite thing about FFA is the way it expands students’ horizons. Students of all backgrounds get to experience the joys and discomforts of agricultural life through competitions, clinics, conventions, SAE, the classroom, and more. FFA has granted me so many worldly experiences that I would have never had without it.
Favorite FFA Memory:
My dairy judging team and I were on our way to the State Dairy Evaluation when my advisor, Mrs. Owens decided to have us stop by the Alabama Safari Park to pull a little prank on me. I have not been around animals my whole life so this was very funny to see me interact with them. Though it was a shock, it was the most fun I had in a while. My advisor shows people videos of me freaking out to this day.
College Plans:
I plan to attend Auburn University and pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism and Agricultural Communications.
