North District FFA Advisors,

After much discussion and data collection regarding the North District Livestock CDE the North District Livestock CDE Committee and I have decided to try something new this year. I have shared some pros and cons below this general information. In trying this we will see how it goes and if it doesn’t work well, we will go back to the way it was done. Remember, to grow is to accept change.

We are planning on the following:

Two classes of cattle with one class of reasons

Two classes of hogs with one class of reasons

One class of sheep

Total= Five Classes, Two Reasons

Event Timing: Saturday, March 14, 2020 (9 a.m. Onsite registration, Start Time 9:30 a.m.)

Event Address: Tenney Farms,. 5251 County Road 601, Hanceville, AL 35077

Registration Cost for Participation: $0 – No Charge (Dues/sponsor cover costs associated with the event)

Please complete this online registration form by close of business (4 p.m.) on February 28, 2020 in order to participate. There will be an on-site registration to verify the teams/members that are registered and make any permissible adjustments. Two alternates per chapter will be allowed. However, be aware that alternates will not use official scan cards and will not be giving oral reasons.

This event is open to all FFA chapters in the North District. Each chapter is encouraged to participate. Please refer to the latest Contests and Awards Booklet and the individual contest booklets which can be found on the Resources page of www.alabamaffa.org prior to the event. Other information related to this event can be found on the Calendar page of www.alabamaffa.org.

Lunch will be on your own. Please plan accordingly.

Please be weather aware prior to the event and plan accordingly. The event will go on, unless the weather is severe. If the event must be rescheduled, an email will be sent out to notify chapter advisors.

To Register click on this link. One registration per chapter. You MUST preregister to compete.

PROS CONS (or potential concerns)
  1. More students/members may be involved at the district FFA level.
  2. Students who compete in this event may also compete in a different event in April.
  3. Buses should be more available on a Saturday.
  4. This event does not interrupt instructional time for these students and teachers. No sub is required.
  5. Because this is a singular contest, we (the committee and staff) can make sure the quality of the contest continues to improve.
  6. This should increase our total participation numbers for the district as a whole.
  7. By doing this committee members will be free to assist in other contests in April.
  8. This contest is an example of how our CDE committees can and should function.
  9. Our district continues to have county contests while the other districts do not, thus sending their best 4 teams to district, regardless of county winner. In an attempt to be competitive and increase our success on a national level this would benefit our students and our state association.
  1. It is on a Saturday, meaning you, me, and the FFA members will be giving up a Saturday.
  2. Spring sports are competing on Saturdays e.g. baseball and softball.
  3. I have concerns about acquiring transportation for my students or a bus driver on Saturday.
  4. I will have students that can’t go because it is Saturday.

Note: I believe because of the lead time we are giving advisors that all of these obstacles may be overcome, if you start planning now.

As always, if you have questions concerns or comments please feel free to send me those.

Again, we can’t grow if we are unwilling to change.

Sincerely,

Andy Chamness
